Vier aanraders uit de SexWorks!?-leeshoek

Het SexWorks!?-festival loopt vandaag met de slotavond Under the red – praatcafé met een sekswerker ten einde, maar niet getreurd voor al degenen die geïnteresseerd blijven: via deze leestips kan je je verder verdiepen in de diverse contexten waarin sekswerkers (over)leven en meer te weten komen over de noden en stigma’s waarmee ze geconfronteerd worden.

Dankzij Rosa vzw konden we bezoekers van ons pop-up festival in de Ravensteingalerij een waaier aan boeken aanbieden om te lezen in de knusse zithoek. Hieronder selecteerden we alvast een paar opmerkelijke boeken uit het aanbod. Voor meer literatuur rond diverse genderthema’s kan je altijd een kijkje nemen in het bibliotheekarchief van Rosa vzw!

Invisible: Britain’s migrant sex workers – Hsiao-hung Pai

Ming en Beata delen niet enkel dezelfde taal of culturele achtergrond, ook hun levensverhalen lopen opmerkelijk dicht bij elkaar. Beiden zijn ze alleenstaande moeders van in de dertig en migreerden ze naar Groot-Brittannië om op zoek te gaan naar een nieuw leven: Ming uit China en Baeta uit Polen. Ze hadden niet verwacht dat hun reis zou eindigen in een Brits bordeel.

“Hard to read of the experience of so many women trapped by hostile immigration, pimped out, or trafficked and caught in the sex trade. I was so saddened to read of the increase in recent years despite all that so many organisations are doing to try to help. The narratives within the book made it , for all that it was hard, a readable book, though sometimes they all got so tangled that it was hard to keep track.”

“I usually don’t go in for non-fiction very often but i did hear a lot of positive reviews about this book. When i read it i couldn’t help but feel for the victims of this industry considering what they’re forced to do. The origins of sex: History of the first sexual revolution – Faramerz Dabhoiwala

Een man geeft toe dat toen hij dronken was, hij seks wilde hebben met een achttienjarig meisje. Zij wordt gearresteerd en ontkent dat ze geslachtsgemeenschap hadden, maar smeekt uiteindelijk om Gods vergiffenis. Vervolgens wordt ze publiekelijk opgehangen naast haar aanvaller.

Deze gebeurtenissen vonden plaats in 1644 in Boston. Vandaag zouden ze daar met afschuw bekeken worden. Hoe – en wanneer – heeft er een transformatie van de attitudes van onze cultuur ten opzichte van seks plaatsgevonden?

Paid for: My journey through prostitution – Rachel Moran

Rachel Moran, kind van twee geestelijk onstabiele ouders, verliet op veertienjarige leeftijd het huis. Ze was dakloos en werd prostituee om te overleven. Met intelligentie en empathie beschrijft ze de angsten die haar en anderen op straat en in de bordelen overvielen. Moran spreekt ook over de psychologische schade die gepaard gaat met prostitutie en de vervreemding van het lichaam. Op tweeëntwintigjarige leeftijd ontsnapte ze aan prostitutie. Sindsdien is ze schrijver en abolitionist.

The politics of the body – Alison Phipps

Alison Phipps schetst in dit boek de politieke sociologie van het vrouwenlichaam aan de hand van kernvragen rond seksueel geweld, gender en islam, sekswerk en moederschap. Haar analyse onthult hoe het vrouwenlichaam wordt gebruikt tijdens dubieuze retoriek en paradoxale loyaliteiten in een context van neoliberale en neoconservatieve denkkaders. Ze onderzoekt hoe verschillende actoren binnen het politieke spectrum feminisme karikaturaal belasteren en feministen verwijten dat ze een positioneringsprobleem hebben.

It analyses four feminist topics and relates them to the overarching neoliberal and neoconservative values that infiltrate our lives.
