<h3>Op zoek naar een positieve invulling van mannelijkheid</h3>

<div class="flex_column av_three_fifth  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  " style='border-radius:0px; '><section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock '   itemprop="text" ><p>Tijdens juli en augustus van 2023 trokken de deelnemende CHanGE-jongeren naar <strong>Kameroen</strong>, <strong>Jordanië</strong> en <strong>de Filipijnen</strong>. Tijdens deze reizen gingen we in gesprek met diverse lokale <strong>activisten en organisaties die werken rond gendergelijkheid en seksuele rechten</strong> en probeerden we te achterhalen <strong>op welke manier mannelijkheid een rol speelt</strong> in hun werk. Deze organisaties houden counteren het dominante mannelijkheidsbeeld door actief toe te werken naar gezonde invullingen van mannelijkheid.</p>
<p><strong>Be A GENTLEman</strong> neemt deze verhalen als startpunt om verder te onderzoeken hoe we in België een <strong>positieve invulling van mannelijkheid</strong> kunnen vormgeven. Onze slogan benadrukt het belang van zachtheid, sympathie, en emotionele intelligentie als essentiële eigenschappen van mannelijkheid. De campagneacties werken op verschillende manieren toe naar een bredere, inclusievere definitie van mannelijkheid in uiteenlopende dimensies van beeldvorming. We zullen stereotypes deconstrueren, diversiteit in mannelijke expressie voeren en open communicatie stimuleren. Door te benadrukken dat er kracht schuilt in het tonen van kwetsbaarheid en respect voor elkaar, breken we het traditionele beeld van mannelijkheid af om plaats te maken voor een veelheid aan evenwaardige mannelijkheden.</p>

<p>Het is weer zover: we stellen opnieuw de oproep open voor 12 enthousiaste kandidaten voor CHanGE 2023.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ucos.be/change/">CHanGE</a>: <strong>C</strong>ampaign for sexual <strong>H</strong>ealth and <strong>G</strong>ender <strong>E</strong>quality, is een campagne van UCOS die studenten de mogelijkheid geeft om in het buitenland onderzoek te voeren naar gendergelijkheid en seksuele gezondheid.</p>
<p>De deelnemers sprokkelden de voorbije jaren straffe verhalen bijeen van inspirerende activisten en organisaties uit Oeganda, Congo, Cuba, India, Libanon, Marokko, Mexico, Griekenland, Egypte en Mozambique. Tijdens een CHanGE-najaarscampagne in België zorgen ze ervoor dat deze vaak ongehoorde stemmen verder galmen dan de grenzen van hun thuisland.</p>

<p>Over the span of 5 years of CHanGE there was a special bond with the Ugandese youth organisation UYAHF (Uganda Youth and Adolescents Health Forum), who advocate for change in Uganda. By happening of an inspiring encounter in 2017, <a href="https://www.ucos.be/change-2/campagne-2017-period/">the CHanGE campaign of that year</a> was formed to talk about menstrual hygiene management. Both UYAHF and CHanGE share the sense of <strong>engagement to support local youth to make progress for sexual and reproductive health and gender equality in their own communities.</strong><br />
In spite of difficulties to continue the cooperation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a strong connection and continuation of cooperation remained, resulting in a youth project in a Ugandese refugee settlement in Uganda. Moreover, participants of CHanGE and other Belgian students were given the opportunity to get to know the advocacy group and also take up an internship there. This cooperation was made possible with support from Flanders Foreign Office (Vlaanderen Buitenlandse Zaken).</p>
<h3>Youth Advocacy Champions for CHanGE</h3>
<p>UYAHF is a youth-led and youth-serving organisation in Uganda that strengthens and amplifies the voices of youth when it comes to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender equality. In the collaboration project with UCOS, it focused on <strong>child marriages and teenage pregnancies in refugee settlement Kyaka II and its surroundings</strong>. The project started in 2019 and ended in 2021. It had a great influence on both the local communities in which they operate as well on Uganda’s national plan to end child marriage and teenage pregnancies.<br />
On a local activities level, UYAHF has created a team of 20 promising young people -so called Youth Advocacy Champions- out of the host and refugee communities, who were trained on SRHR, SGBV and how to increase involvement and participation of other people. They visited local schools, churches, youth centres and a health centre with community outreaches to increase their knowledge and awareness. <strong>Even during the COVID-19 pandemic</strong>, they continued their operations by going door-to-door, not only offering information on the virus, but also on SRHR and distributing condoms and oral contraception pills. Lastly, UHAYF has established a safe space in the village of Sweswe in which young people can come to relax, study or learn skills. Some of the equipment available are sewing machines and a piano.</p>
<p>Next to activities which directly impact and benefit the local communities, UYAHF and their Youth Advocacy Champions have <strong>conducted research on SRHR in regions in which they are active</strong>. They collected data on the experiences of their peers on SRHR, child marriage and teenage pregnancies. Based on the results, they convinced the  Ugandan Office of the Prime Minister of the urgency of tackling child marriage and teenage pregnancies, and developed  a framework and for Ugandan authorities. Consequently, UYAHF has received <strong>strong support from both local as the national governments</strong> for their activities. They are very proud of their achievements in carrying out an assessment and forming a framework in which the SRHR experiences of young Ugandan people are documented. The local government intends to follow up on the <a href="https://uyahf.com/4875-2/">action plan</a> and some of the Youth Advocacy Champions will proceed with their youth work even though the official project has ended.</p>
<h3>Belgian students at UYAHF</h3>
<p>Hanne Vindevogel completed an internship at UYAHF in 2020, as part of her postgraduate education in Sustainable Development. She would have spent 6 months of her internship in Uganda, but had to leave the country early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “The short period in which I resided in Kampala was very educational and busy. I was involved in the organisation of activities, campaigns, the attendance of meetings, the writing of reports, research, participation of meetings with partners, events of UYAHF both in Kampala as well as elsewhere”, says Hanne. After her return to Belgium in the beginning of the pandemic, she was able to continue her internship digitally. After all, all activities were suddenly organised online. “The weekly team meetings could continue to take place, I was still able to help realise the alternative activities, and to map the impact of the lockdown on the lives of the youth and on SRHR. Besides that, UYAHF made a podcast that I recorded, moderated and edited. I had not done this before so this was a skill I could develop there.  It was a major adaption, as for everyone, to conduct an internship completely digitally but we managed to adapt and the cooperation went smoothly until the end of my internship.”</p>
<p>Hanne thinks her internship improved her communication skills and self-awareness. “It also made me reflect a lot on the concept of an internship abroad, <strong>my role as a white intern, my positionality and on what I could and could not do.</strong>” Hanne concludes “it was very interesting to conduct the internship in two completely different settings. It was completely different yet luckily I could still continue the internship.”</p>
<p>Esther Philippen did her internship at UYAHF in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. “I experienced what a trump card it can be to have a passion that you can convert into a professional or voluntary commitment. What strongly resonates with me is the <strong>enthusiasm and professionality of the people that worked at UYAHF as well as their volunteers</strong>. Everyone could tell inspiring stories about how to they are committed to gender and SRHR, each from their own perspective. <p>For Esther, it was eye-opening how plans changed alle the time and the flexibility of the UYAHF team was of major importance. “A school that does not respond to a workshop, a traffic stop in which you are stuck for a while, a boda boda that does not show up due to heavy rainfall,&#8230; These circumstances have an impact of how you can perform your work. The solution-oriented mindset and resilience of the workers of UHAYF are skills of which I most definitely learned something.”</p>

<div class="flex_column av_three_fifth  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  " style='border-radius:0px; '><section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock  av_inherit_color'   itemprop="text" ><p>Na vijf jaar onderzoeksreizen naar het buitenland door Vlaamse jongeren, hield het project <a href="https://www.ucos.be/change/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CHanGE</a>, de Campaign on sexual Health and Gender Equality, een dag van reflectie, viering en tentoonstelling. Op 11 november 2021 werden de Belgische campagnes die voortkwamen uit de onderzoeksreizen, en de intersectionele thema’s die ze belichtten nog eens in de schijnwerpers geplaatst.</p>
<p>Sinds 2017 hebben interviews, ontmoetingen en belevingen met buitenlandse organisaties en activisten aanleiding gegeven tot Belgische campagnes rond <i>period poverty</i>, sekswerk, LGBT+-migratie, genderbinariteit, en inclusieve gezondheidszorg.<br />
Verschillende sprekers en ex-CHanGEmakers gaven tijdens dit evenement <i>talks</i> over hun huidige projecten en ondernemingen binnen het veld van seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid en rechten (de sprekers, hun onderwerpen en bezigheden kun je nog altijd nalezen in het <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/240977707913324/?active_tab=discussion" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Facebookevent</a>).</p>
<p>Kers op de taart was de Europese <a href="https://www.gene.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">GENE</a>-award die UCOS toegekend werd in 2020, als erkenning voor de kwaliteitsvolle ondersteuning voor <i>global education</i>. <div class="flex_column av_one_half  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  " style='border-radius:0px; '><section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock '   itemprop="text" ><p>De <a href="https://www.ucos.be/who-cares/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">CHanGE-campagne van 2021</span></a> draaide rond het belang van<strong> inclusieve en sensitieve gezondheidszorg</strong>. Die focus van de campagne kwam er na de onderzoeksreizen naar Mexico, Libanon en Griekenland, waar lokale activisten en organisaties ervoor strijden om gezondheidszorg te verkrijgen waarin iedereen zich goed kan voelen. Opvallend was ook het voortdurende terugkomen van <strong><a href="http://www.solidariteitdiversiteit.be/kwesties.php?issue=8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">safe spaces</span></a></strong> tijdens deze reizen. Op plekken en in gemeenschappen waar de veiligheid van LGBTQIA+-personen niet zomaar gegeven is, richt de Queer gemeenschap zelf ruimtes op (fysiek, digitaal of anders) om een gevoel van veiligheid en vaak ook verbondenheid te creëren.</p>
<p>Uit deze ervaringen kwam het artikel &#8220;Safe spaces: noodzakelijk maar geen wondermiddel&#8221; voort op Sociaal.net.<br />

<p>Het is weer zover: we stellen opnieuw de oproep open voor 12 enthousiaste kandidaten voor CHanGE 2022.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ucos.be/change/">CHanGE: <strong>C</strong>ampaign for sexual <strong>H</strong>ealth and <strong>G</strong>ender <strong>E</strong>quality</a>, is een campagne van UCOS die studenten de mogelijkheid geeft om in het buitenland onderzoek te voeren naar gendergelijkheid en seksuele gezondheid.</p>
<p>De deelnemers sprokkelden de voorbije jaren straffe verhalen bijeen van inspirerende activisten en organisaties uit Oeganda, Congo, Cuba, India, Libanon, Marokko, Mexico en Griekenland. Tijdens een CHanGE-najaarscampagne in België zorgen ze ervoor dat deze vaak ongehoorde stemmen verder galmen dan de grenzen van hun thuisland.</p>
<p>In 2022 focust CHanGE &#8211; The Climate Edition op de toekomst van gendergelijkheid en seksuele gezondheid in een wereld die drastisch opwarmt. <span id="page3R_mcid14" class="markedContent"><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">De grootste slachtoffers van deze </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">klimaat</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">crisis </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">hebben de </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">kleinste</span> <span dir="ltr" role="presentation">verantwoordelijkheid</span> <span dir="ltr" role="presentation">in hoeveel er historisch gezien al is uitgestoten en het minste macht in </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">het veranderen ervan</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">. Niet enkel vrouwen, maar ook personen van kleur, indigenous </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">bevolkingsgroepen en LGBTQ+</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">&#8211;</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">personen bevinden zich in een meer kwetsbar</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">e positie. </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">Is </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">het dan toevallig dat vooral vrouwen en non</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">&#8211;</span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">binaire personen </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">wereldwijd vooral </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">op de </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">barricades staan voor een </span><span dir="ltr" role="presentation">gezonder leefmilieu? </span></span></p>

<div class="flex_column av_two_third  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  " style='border-radius:0px; '><section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock '   itemprop="text" ><p>Op 19 mei 2021 werd het Universitair Centrum voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (UCOS) bekroond als<strong> één van de zeven laureaten</strong> voor de <strong>Global Education initiatives</strong> in Europe. Het netwerk van 60 ministeries achter <a href="https://www.gene.eu/awards">GENE</a> ging op zoek naar innovatieve en kwaliteitsvolle initiatieven die met jongeren rond wereldburgerschapseducatie werken. UCOS werd bekroond voor<strong> het studentenproject <a href="https://www.ucos.be/change-2/change/">CHanGE: de Campaign for sexual Health and Gender Equality</a>.</strong></p>
<h3>Jongeren zetten zich in voor gendergelijkheid</h3>
<p>IDAHOT, of de internationale dag tegen holebi-, intersekse- en transfobie, is nog maar net voorbij en dat heeft u ongetwijfeld gemerkt aan het online activisme van jongeren uit uw netwerk. Want ook dat merken we bij UCOS: er is een groot engagement van jongeren om zich uit te spreken over thema’s rond gendergelijkheid en seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid en rechten (SRGR).</p>
<p>Sinds het project CHanGE gelanceerd werd in 2017 dienen veel studenten uit het hoger onderwijs een kandidatuur in om aan het project deel te nemen. Jaarlijks worden daar 12 beloftevolle jongeren uit gekozen die na een intensieve voorbereiding op onderzoeksreis naar DR Congo, India, Oeganda, Cuba, Libanon of Marokko vertrokken. Daar gingen ze op zoek naar inspirerende activisten en organisaties die strijden voor meer rechten, toegang, informatie of beter beleid op vlak van gender en SRGR.</p>
<p>De inspirerende verhalen en voorbeelden van activisme en verandering uit deze landen vormen het uitgangspunt bij de campagnes die de studenten opzetten in de Belgische samenleving. Ze worden gebruikt om de Belgische samenleving uit te dagen en te verrijken op het vlak van SRGR. Vaak wordt ervan uitgegaan dat we in België al erg ver staan op vlak van gendergelijkheid en er in andere landen nog veel werk te verrichten valt. Maar CHanGE zet dit gekende narratief op zijn kop: overal ter wereld werken mensen aan verandering, en je zou verbaasd zijn hoe inspirerend het is om daarvan te leren.</p>
<h3>GENE award voor Europese uitwisseling</h3>
<p>De GENE award wil kwaliteitsvolle projecten erkenning geven en een platform bieden om kennis en inspiratie uit te wisselen met beleidsmakers en gelijkaardige organisaties. Voor de periode 2020 en 2021 werden initiatieven op nationaal niveau geselecteerd, waarna ze op Europees niveau konden meedingen naar de prijs.</p>
<p>Uit de 47 ingestuurde initiatieven werden 7 laureaten geselecteerd. Elk van de laureaten kreeg een certificaat van excellentie en een geldprijs van €10,000. Met dit geld zal het project verder worden uitgebouwd. Het project wordt mogelijk gemaakt door de steun van de Belgische Ontwikkelingssamenwerking (DGD), DeMens.nu, de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels International en Vlaanderen Buitenlandse Zaken.</p>

Deze verwijzingen zijn dus opgedeeld volgens twee categorieën, man of vrouw.</p>
<p>Het is zo dat voornaamwoorden vaak gebruikt worden op basis van de veronderstelling dat iemand ofwel man, ofwel vrouw is. Hierdoor ontstaan er enkele valkuilen. Eerst en vooral vormt deze beperkte keuze een probleem voor mensen die zich noch man, noch vrouw voelen of net allebei. Voor hen worden – vaak onbewust – de verkeerde voornaamwoorden gebruikt. Verder gebruikt men voornaamwoorden op basis van hoe iemand eruit ziet. Deze assumpties kunnen fout zijn aangezien hoe iemand eruit ziet, niet per se overeenkomt met hoe iemand zich voelt of identificeert. Voornaamwoorden zijn gelinkt aan iemands genderidentiteit. Zo kan het dus zijn dat iemand die zich typisch vrouwelijk kleedt, toch de voornaamwoorden hij/hem gebruikt. Daarbij kan iemands genderidentiteit evolueren doorheen de jaren. Dit betekent dus ook dat die persoon ook hun voornaamwoorden aanpast.</p>
</div></section></div><div style='padding-bottom:10px;' class='av-special-heading av-special-heading-h3  blockquote modern-quote '><h3 class='av-special-heading-tag'  itemprop="headline"  >Welke genderneutrale voornaamwoorden gebruik ik dan in het Nederlands?</h3><div class='special-heading-border'><div class='special-heading-inner-border' ></div></div></div>

<div class="flex_column av_three_fifth  flex_column_div av-zero-column-padding first  " style='border-radius:0px; '><section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock '   itemprop="text" ><p>Vaak gebruiken non-binaire personen in het Nederlands de voornaamwoorden die/hen/hun. Deze voornaamwoorden kan je dus ook gebruiken in eender welke situatie waarbij je iemands voorkeur van voornaamwoorden of gender niet (zeker) weet.</p>
<p>Enkele voorbeeldzinnen:</p>
<p>“Ik hoorde dat <i>die </i>ging studeren aan de universiteit.”</p>
<p>“We spreken morgen af met <i>hen </i>aan de bibliotheek.”</p>
<p>“Ik neem <i>hun </i>zak al mee naar beneden.”</p>
<p>Ook als je naar mensen in het algemeen verwijst en je taal inclusief wilt maken, zijn genderneutrale voornaamwoorden het gemakkelijkst zonder een opsomming te moeten maken van alle verschillende voornaamwoorden.</p>
<p>Toch gebruiken niet alle non-binaire mensen deze voornaamwoorden. We gaan uit van het zelf identificatie principe. Het kan dus ook dat iemand een combinatie van die/hun enerzijds en hij/hem of zij/haar anderzijds gebruikt. Dit betekent dat je deze persoon met beide voornaamwoorden mag aanspreken. Ingewikkeld? Eigenlijk is het heel simpel: vraag het hen gewoon!</p>

Zo breek je het ijs en is het gemakkelijker voor anderen om jou hierin te volgen.</p>
<p>Merk je dat iemand bezig is met het exploreren van hun identiteit? Of wil je gewoon nog eens zeker weten wat je vriend’s voornaamwoorden zijn? Introduceer het onderwerp voorzichtig en geef aan dat je zeker wilt zijn dat je hen juist aanspreekt.</p>

Als je verder actief moeite steekt in het correct gebruiken van de voornaamwoorden, toont dit jouw respect naar de persoon in kwestie. Maak de fout vooral niet over jou.<br />
Voelt het nog steeds niet helemaal oké? Neem de persoon even apart of stuur hen een dm om nog eens oprecht je excuses aan te bieden en eventueel te vragen hoe deze persoon zich hierbij voelt of wat je nog kan doen.</p>

<section class="av_textblock_section"  itemscope="itemscope" itemtype="https://schema.org/BlogPosting" itemprop="blogPost" ><div class='avia_textblock '   itemprop="text" ><p>Zet je voornaamwoorden in je bio op Twitter, Instagram of op het einde van je e-mail om assumpties en fouten te vermijden. Zo wordt het gemakkelijker om te communiceren met elkaar zonder onnodige correcties te moeten maken. Ook al ga je ervan uit dat iedereen je voornaamwoorden kent, kan het geen kwaad om ze toch in je sociale media of e-mail te zetten. Zo verlaag je mee de drempel voor anderen om dit ook te doen en normaliseer je genderdiversiteit.<br />
Denk ook eens na hoe je je taal zo inclusief mogelijk kan maken. Je kan bijvoorbeeld bij het aanhef van je e-mail niet meneer of mevrouw gebruiken.</p>
